Henry Purcell was one of the greatest Baroque era composers, over-shadowed today by the greatness of Bach and Handel. However, during his lifetime, Purcell was unquestionably the most famous English composer known for his choral anthems and hymns, theater music, and operas. His claim to opera fame rested on his opera ‘Dido and Aeneas’, but he also wrote a popular work based on the legend of King Arthur and libretto of John Dryden.
