Samuel Parker was an American preacher who was a missionary to remote Native American Indian tribes. Parker led an exploration voyage with the intent of discovering the views of native tribes, specifically their views toward Christianity. He kept a journal detailing the events of the expedition which was later published.

The book includes vocabulary of various Indian languages, geology and geography of the American west, as well as an impressive folding map of the Oregon Territory. It should be noted that Graff calls this map “the earliest map of the Oregon interior with a pretense to accuracy.” Other interesting topics include descriptions of Mormons, natural history, and a description of Honolulu and Hawaii.
