1841 Wild Sports of Southern Africa Harris 1st Big Game Hunting Book Illustrated
William Cornwallis Harris was a 19th-century English explorer who is best remembered for his voyages to South Africa. In 1836, Harris ventured to South Africa where he spent nearly two years hunting antelope and following the leads of Matabele people. One of the defining traits of Harris, which differentiated him from other hunters, was that he illustrated the large African animals that he hunted, many of which were remarkably accurate for the time.
The events of this expedition were published in a book entitled ‘Wild Sports of Southern Africa’ a work that featured Harris’s own illustrations of animals and tribal people. And, while this book is fascinating in its own right, it is often considered to be the very first book written exclusive only big game hunting!
This 1841 third edition is the first to include the complete collection of Harris’s color plates.
