William Greener was a 19^th-century English inventor and gun-maker who published a treatise on the history and firearms and the art of gun-making. ‘The Science of Gunnery’ covers the whole gamut of firearms beginning with ancient weapons and the invention of gunpowder, through artillery, and types of hunting. Greener includes illustrations of war and battle scenes, decorative rifles, ship cannons, and much more. According to Riling,

“A work on ancient guns and arms, gunpowder, artillery, iron for gun barrels, proof of barrels, gun making and the science of gunnery, including its application to rifle and musket, shot, caps and wadding, with a final chapter on whale shooting.”

This 1841 first edition example of Greener’s ‘Gunnery’ features a handwritten gift inscription to EMPEROR Nicholas I of Russia! signed by the Greener himself!
