In 1823, Irish minster James William Massie began his missionary career in India, where he ministered from Madras to Bangalore until 1827. His Indian missionary career was documented in his book “Continental India” in which he discusses ancient Indian cultures, Hindu religions, modern customs, and military conquests of Great Britain in Hindustan just before the British Raj took power. According to the “Church of England Quarterly Review,” Massie, “interweaves a personal and anecdotal interest throughout- this is the peculiar and distinctive feature of his work”

 

This 1840 printing is a first edition of Massie’s account of India. Massie describes landscapes- waterfalls, Ganges river, and Himalayan mountains- The Punjab, Indian sultans, differences in Buddhist and Hindu doctrines, effects of idolatry, and famines and floods.
