1838 1ed Shipwreck of Stirling Castle Australia James Fraser Voyages Illustrated
The Stirling Castle was a Scottish ship who is remembered for its fateful voyage where it wrecked near Queensland, Australia. Commanded by James Fraser, this ship was on an excursion toward Singapore where they ran aground on the reefs. Those that survived the wreck were taken into camps by local Aboriginal people of the Butchulla tribes.
‘The Shipwreck of the Stirling Castle’ is a rare account of the wreck and the events of the survivors. Written by John Curtis, this book describes the tortures endured by the survivors, including Fraser’s wife Eliza. In addition to describing the wreck and the local tribes, Curtis describes the landscape of Australia and Amboyana Islands, account of ‘kangaroo dogs’ (dingo), influence of the British government and British missionaries in Australia, along with impressive full-page engravings depicting events of the voyage. One notable engraving is an illustration of Captain Fraser being stripped naked and speared.
