In 1790, English naturalist James Sowerby published what would become the preeminent illustrated work on English botany. Simply titled, ‘English Botany’, this work was a complete compendium of the native plants in Great Britain. Sowerby provided beautiful illustrations accompanied by descriptions of the various properties, natural habitat, and other characteristics of numerous plants across Britain.

In tandem with Charles E. Sowerby, English botanist Sir James Edward Smith would later publish his own work on the subject, collaborating with and utilizing James Sowerby’s popular floral illustrations. This specific edition includes 165 exquisite, hand-colored illustrations.
