Benjamin Godwin was an early 19th-century British preacher who is best-remembered for his sermons, lectures, and essays on slavery abolition. Beginning in 1830, Godwin set out to lead an opposition to slave trade, an effort which would attract other notable names in the anti-slavery process. Over the course of the next three years, Godwin would help generate impactful laws which hindered or limited slavery, until the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 was passed making slavery illegal throughout Great Britain.

 

Following his successful attempts at leading to the end slave trade in Great Britain, Godwin had his anti-slavery lectures published in one book entitled simply ‘Lectures of Slavery’.
