Thomas Wright was a 19th-century English folklorist best-known for his familiarity with medieval literature and folk tales. His writings covered famous legends such as Robin Hood and the medieval ‘Arabian Nights’, as well as those of mythology, superstitions, and mystical magic. Of his lesser-known works, his edition of two 14th-century poems, as he himself stated, “are worthy of preservation” (his preface to ‘Tale’). These poems, ‘The Tale of the Basyn’ and ‘The Frere and the Boy’, are said, again by Wright, to be

“two of the most generally popular of our tales of magic and enchantment in the earliest forms that we at present know.”

This 1836 edition of Wright’s “Basyn” and “Frere” retains the black-letter style in which these poems would have been originally published.
