An interesting 19th century Edo woodblock-print of ‘Iroha Bunko’ is a Chushingura tale written by Tamenaga Shunsui Jr. in the nijobon style illustrated by famous Japanese ukiyo-e artist Keisai Eisen. It is believed that Tamenaga Shunsui Sr wrote volumes 1-4 and Tamenaga Shunsui Jr and other disciples continued his work writing volumes 5-18. The ninjōbon style is a pre-modern Japanese literary genre focusing on young love to attract female readers. Tamenaga describes the complexity of human mentality painting the ronin in a more positive light than in previous Chushingura. Chūshingura is the name of fictionalized accounts of the historical event concerning the 47 ronin and the mission to avenge the death of their master, Asano Naganori, which has been told in kabuki, bunraku, stage plays, films, novels, and television shows ranking among the most popular of all historical stories in Japan. This story regaining popularity with the 2013 film starring Keanu Reeves, ‘47 Ronin.’

This rare undated edition is written in the typical column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading with excellent color and black and white illustrations throughout of a ship, bridge, different samurai, murder, Mount Fuji, courtesans, and much more!
