1836 1st ed Syria Holy Land & Turkey Arabic Ruins Damascus Constantinople
‘Syria, The Holy Land’ is a remarkable, 19th-century illustrated atlas by John Carne, William H. Bartlett, and Thomas Allom. Originally published in 1836 in three separate parts, this work features stunning artwork depicting attractive views of ancient Middle Eastern and holy Land ruins as well as artist-renditions of cities such as Damascus. Bartlett was concerned with providing picturesque views of places Western Europeans would not be able to see and, curiously, the plates are still highly desirable today due to their accuracy of Turkish architecture.
Also bound within is ‘The Beauties of the Bosphorus’. Written by Miss Pardoe, this beautiful collection of more of William H. Bartlett’s illustrations that beautifully depict the Bosphorus strait (modern day: Strait of Istanbul in northwestern Turkey).
