1834 North America Voyages CUBA Indians Salem Witchcraft Henry Tudor SIGNED
Henry Tudor was a 19th-century English lawyer who embarked on a tour on North America and the Caribbean islands in 1831. Per Hough, Tudor had no apparent object to fulfill in this voyage beyond personal observation, so his records were made with ‘impartial fairness’. This work describes geographic interests of North American countryside, customs and clothing in cities such as New York, encountering Indian tribes and villages, and a description of Cuba and Havana.
However, this book, ‘Narrative of a Tour’ has an interesting section on Salem and its notoriety for witchcraft. In this chapter Tudor gives an account of the effects of witches on the town, prisons, and even the existing crime.
According to Howes,
“Travels extended from Maine to Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and Louisiana; Americans are defended from Trollopian accusations.”
