Unsure? Ask an Expert!

Jacobus de Cessolis was a 13th-century Italian author who published a book that was nearly as popular as the Bible – a book on the customs of noble Italian men or, ‘The Book of Chess’. This book was a curious pairing of chess instruction and strategy with instruction on duties of noblemen. This book was not only the best work on chess from the 13th-century, it would become the basis for William Caxton’s 15th-century chess manual.

Known originally as “De ludo scachorum”, this book explains the origins of chess and how it was intended to correct the evil behaviors of kings and rulers. It also discusses the different pieces and the parallels to their ranks in society. It concludes with actual gameplay instruction and rules.

This 1829 Italian edition includes the 14 original illustrations, in the style of 15th-century master illustrators.
