Luigi Lanzi (1732–1810) was an Italian art historian and archaeologist. He was so prominent that he was buried in the church of the Santa Croce at Florence by the side of Michelangelo. He wrote an important history of Italian painting, ‘The History of Painting in Italy’, which was translated in the 19^th-century by Thomas Roscoe. Each volume contains in-depth information about schools of painting from different regions and cities, as well as about specific main artists.

Note the impressive leather binding and marbled boards on this 1828 first English edition, bound in six volumes.
