William Mariner was a 19th-century English author who is best-known for his voyage to Tonga. While living (mostly as a detained captive) in Tonga, Mariner gained considerable knowledge of the culture, customs, lifestyle, and society of the Tongan people. After four years, Mariner returned home to England where he began writing his book “Account of the Natives of the Tonga Islands”. This work would become the best source for information on Tonga and the Tongan language.
Mariner’s famous account was originally published in 1817, edited by John Martin, and would be again be printed in ‘Constable’s Miscellany’ in numerous issues. This 1827 edition of the Constable edition includes an appendix of “A Grammar of the Tongan Language”.
