“A very valuable memoire of the history of the reign of Henry IV”

Maximlien de Bethune was a 16th-century French statesman who was the first Duke of Sully. Most known for his service under Henry IV of France, Sully left a collection of memoirs which is now a valuable and important work on the history of France during the reign of Henry the Great. Even though ‘Memoires’ contains many fictitious stories, it is still recognized for its accuracy and portrayal of European royalty.

The most controversial section of ‘Memoires’ is Sully’s vision of a utopian society designed for all of Europe. He envisioned a Christian republic that was governed by a ‘Very Christian Council’ in which all differences were resolved and a military was complete removed. Some scholars even claim that Sully’s plan helped establish what would become the current European Union.

According to Tulard, this work is a “very valuable memoire of the history of the reign of Henry IV.”
