1818 1st/1st RARE View of United States MAP Canada Mexico America Native Indians
An incredibly rare first printing, first edition of English topographer Eneas Mackenzie’s historical treatise, ‘View of the United States of America.’ A true rarity! There are currently only 2 library copies in recorded existence of this 1818 printing. Globally all other publicly archived copies are of later printings (1819, 1820, or 1830), many of which are lacking the highly desirable and thus often extracted folding map of the United States as it was in 1818!
Within, Mackenzie provides an exhaustive description of the state of early 19th-century North America, primarily the United States. Contents include a general overview of North and South America, the federal boundaries of the US and Canada, climate, agricultural notes, detailed topographical notes, commentary on botany, zoology, mineralogy, and so much. Mackenzie then proceeds with the states and territories currently annexed and describes the geography, trade, resources, population, manners, customs, religion, education, chief towns, local government, and history of each.
Notably, Mackenzie concludes the book with an overview of the native tribes in America. Specifically, he describes their customs, lifestyle, culture, beliefs, and government.
