In the summer of 1816, a French voyage on the ship Medusa set sail for Senegal and Port Saint-Louis. Along the way, the ship wrecked before arriving in Senegal, leaving hundreds of people on a small, makeshift raft was built to try to keep as many sailors afloat as possible. After a week, only 15 men remained alive until they were rescued by a passer-by ship.

 

A fascinating account of the shipwreck and rescue was published in 1818 under the title ‘Narrative of a Voyage to Senegal’ which included the famed engraving of the raft of Medusa.
