Amasa Delano was an early American ship captain who served in the American Revolution. While his life on the sea did not begin until after the war, his career as a captain has made a lasting impact throughout history. He wrote a book entitled ‘Narrative of Voyages and Travels’ in which he describes his Pacific voyages. However, one particular section of this work is by far the most important.

In this book, Delano recounts his experiences encountering the Spanish slave ship, the Tryal in 1805. He discusses his views of the ship and the events leading toward the mutiny by the slaves on board. This book was widely popular throughout the English-speaking world, so much so that author Herman Melville decided to use it as the basis for his book ‘Benito Cereno’.

Beyond being the sole source for Melville’s ‘Benito Cereno’, it includes Delano’s perspectives on the HMS Bounty mutiny and a folding map of Pitcairn Island (Tahiti).
