1814 1ed Irish DRUIDS Toland Ireland Celtic Occult Religion Language Huddleston
John Toland was an Irish philosopher and author in the 18th century. This 1814 edition of Toland’s ‘History of the Druids’ is an account of the Celtic religion and literature which Toland argues is a complete history of priestcraft which “is not only the interest of all wise princes and states, but likewise does especially concern the tranquility and happiness of every private person.” (preface)
This 1814 first edition of Huddleston’s new edition of Toland’s work focuses on language in the comparison of Celts, Greeks, and Romans to show the Celtic peoples as the aboriginal inhabitants of Europe being a dialect of the primary language of Asia. Huddleston begins this work with a brief biography of Toland and provides copious notes on Toland’s history of the Druids both correcting his history and affirming Toland’s research and conclusions.
