John Melish was an early 19th-century Scottish map maker who, after moving to Philadelphia, opened one of the earliest map-making company in America. Many of his maps were included in this book ‘Travels Through the United States of America’ – a survey of his adventures from 1806 through 1812.

According to Clark in his “Travels in the Old South”,

“Melish’s Travels in the United States gives detailed descriptions of the resources and the potentialities of the states he visited and provides reliable facts, which he obtained from excellent sources, about several other states… [this] account remains one of the most accurate and faithful records written in the first part of the nineteenth century”.

An impressive and highly desirable two-volume first edition complete with both folding maps – maps of Kentucky and Ohio!
