1811 1ed Persecution Hippolyto Freemasons Masonic Portuguese Inquisition BRAZIL
Hipolito Jose da Costa Pereira Furtado de Mendonca (1774–1823) was a Brazilian journalist and diplomat. He is remembered for his persecution by the Inquisition and his subsequent rescue by English brethren “who got him under the protection of the British flag.” As author of History of the Dionysian Artificers, published posthumously in 1820, he attempted to draw parallels between masonic initiation and those of the Orphic mysteries of Eleusis.
This 1811 first English edition of ‘A narrative of the persecution of Hippolyto Joseph da Costa’, a translation (possibly by Costa himself) of “Narrativa da perseguicao”, published in London in the same year is a two-volume set with a portrait of Hippolyto himself on the frontispiece.
