Abdallatif al-Baghdadi was a 12th-century Arabic historian who is best known for his account of Egypt. In this book, Abdallatif describes many of the pre-Islamic traditions, architecture, and antiquities found in Egypt which help establish chronological details of Egypt’s past. It is also considered to be one of the first works on Egyptology and includes a detailed account of the famine, as well as the famed Egyptian monuments. It also describes animals, plants, social customs, and even notes on alchemy and Egyptian superstitions!

This first French edition was edited by Silvestre de Sacy, who also included texts in Arabic along with his own critical commentary and notes. Interestingly, this edition includes an Egyptian periodical entitled ‘État des provinces et des villages de l Égypte’ from 1376. A must see!
