Unsure? Ask an Expert!

Henry Bunbury was an 18th-century cartoonist whose works were, curiously, never intended to upset or offend anyone. In both his writings and caricatures, Bunbury shied away from political satire, instead satirizing leisure activities as his primary focus. Perhaps, this is why he instead published his works under the name Geoffrey Gambado, as was the case with his books ‘Annals of Horsemanship’ and ‘Academy for Grown Horsemen’, both featured in this 1808 book.

These works include many of Bunbury’s iconic caricature art pieces including his work “The Apotheosis of Geoffrey Gambado Esqr”. Set as the frontispiece to “Annals”, this cartoon was one of Bunbury’s greatest – an image of Fame riding a wooden horse blowing a trumpet and praising Gambado.
