1807 ATLAS of CHINA Macartney Embassy Asia MAP Russia Tartary VOYAGES Barrow
John Barrow was an 18th-century English naval historian remembered for his geography dictionaries and voyage reports. In 1793, George Macartney headed the first British diplomatic mission to China – The Macartney Embassy. This mission was established to set ports of trade between China and Britain and establish permanent relations between the two world powers.
Barrow published Macartney’s story and included one of the most coveted, early 19th-century atlases on China and Tartary. This book includes views of Chinese flora, architecture and engineering, portraits of Hottentot people, and even a map of the Eastern hemisphere.
This 1807 French edition was translated out of English by Jean Baptiste Breton who happened to publish one of the other landmark works on the history of China.
