In 1758, he published his most important book ‘The Law of Nations’, a book that clarified the rights of states and citizens. It is also notable for being one of the first works to discuss the ‘just war theory’ and its place in international diplomacy. While this book saw many editions throughout the end of the 18th-century, in American, it was best known for being oft referenced by George Washington and Benjamin Franklin for its content on international law and military.
This 1805 printing was the first American edition.
