1804 1ed British BIRDS Bewick Ornithology Eagles Owl Ducks 2v SET Illustrated
Thomas Bewick, a notable English engraver and natural historian, is most famous work on the birds of Great Britain. ‘History of British Birds’ was published in two volumes at the turn of the century and covers both land and water fowl. This work is notable for being referenced in many famous works such as Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.
This set was well received, but the majority of its praise came after the second volume was released. According to British Critic,
“everyone liked it because of the aptness of its descriptions, the accuracy of its figures, the spirit of its wood engravings, and the ingenious variety of its vignettes”
Bewick understood that this book was simply a modest guide to the common man and was not to be the foremost resource on birds; however, because of the incredible illustrations this book was beloved for generations. Per the Tate Gallery,
“the best illustrations are in his natural history books. ‘The History of British Birds’ reveal Bewick’s gifts as a naturalist as well as an engraver.”
Bewick is credited with popularizing, a technical innovation in the printing of illustrations using wood. He adopted metal-engraving tools to cut hard boxwood across the grain, producing printing blocks that could be integrated with metal type, but were much more durable than traditional woodcuts. The result was high quality illustration at a low price, as seen here in this work.
