1802 Atlas of ICELAND Olafsen Travels MAP Illustrated Volcanos Mt Hekla RARE
Eggert Olafsen was an 18th-century Icelandic explorer who, in 1772, published one of the best 18th-century scientific accounts of the Iceland known as ‘Reise igiennem Island’ or simply ‘Travels in Iceland’. Beginning in 1752, Olafsen set out to survey the Icelandic people, native languages, geography and natural sites, and animals, all to improve Icelandic nationalism and patriotism.
This 1802 atlas from Olafsen’s landmark work includes 59 exquisite engravings – views of animals and fish, volcanoes and Mount Hekla, native Icelanders, and an impressive folding map of Iceland. This map alone is exceedingly valuable and is frequently extracted from this atlas and sold by itself.
