1800 1ed La Perouse Voyage Pacific Islands New Zealand Shipwreck MAP Billardiere
In 1785, King Louis XVI appointed Jean Francois la Perouse to lead a world expedition that, hopefully, would supplement, and ultimately complete, the voyages begun by James Cook years earlier. Perouse greatly admired Cook though thought his maps and discoveries were incomplete. The voyage took him and his crew to South America, California, Alaska, Eastern Asia, and south Pacific Islands, where the voyage ultimately ended in shipwreck with no members of the crew to be found.
French scientist Jacques de Labillardiere was a member of voyage that set sail in 1791 in hopes of locating Perouse and his crew. To no avail, Perouse and crew were not found; however, Billardiere was able to gather an abundance of zoological, botanical, and geological specimens while traveling in Oceania. His book ‘Voyage in Search of Perouse’ was an important book describing the customs and languages of local Australian tribes.
This volume of the 1800 first edition of ‘Voyage in Search’ includes an incredible folding map along with engravings of Australian tribes and plants.
