1799 BUBONIC PLAGUE Napoleon Siege of Jaffa Pandemic Papon 2v Medicine Surgery
In 1799, Napoleon and his army captured the city of Jaffa in Egypt. However, following the famous siege, a curious outbreak of the bubonic plague swept over Napoleon’s men and devastated the army numbers. French historian Jean-Pierre Papon, who was known for his surveys of the French Revolution, published an interesting history of the plague which served, not only as a history of the bubonic plague, but as a directive on how to treat and avoid getting the plague.
This rare two-volume first edition of Papon’s “De la peste” was published in Paris in 1799.
