William George Browne was an 18^th-century traveler who is best-known for his voyage through Egypt and Syria. Browne had interest in Ancient Egypt and ancient customs and architecture focusing on the ruins of ancient peoples. His discoveries were written about extensively in his book ‘Travels in Africa’ – a travelogue which contains descriptions of mosques, the Nile River, government and politics, topography and geography in Abyssinia, and much more – even a curious section describing the physical “characteristics of the negroes”. “This important work contains the earliest information in English about Darfur (Sudan). Browne, inspired by Bruce’s travels, went to Egypt in 1792 hoping to explore the oases in the eastern Sahara and to journey to the source of the White Nile”.
