“Virtually all the well-known writers of the Enlightenment were ‘Buffonians’”

― Ernst Mayer

The monumental work by Comte de Buffon, “Histoire Naturelle,” was a fascinating 18th-century collection of articles and encyclopedia entries on material sciences, physics, chemistry, technology, as well as the history of animals. Buffon wrote the volumes with the intent of addressing all of natural history, but after realizing the grandeur of the work, it focuses only on minerals, birds, and quadrupeds. He was one of the first writers to give scientific explanations to Animalia rather than use the biblical explanations of creation. The DSB mentions that

“Buffon’s order is formed by a philosophical bias rather than by science.”

This complete 24-volume set of the ‘Natural History of General Subjects’ of Buffon is illustrated with incredible engravings and essays on a variety of curious topics including:

  • Navigation and voyages; geography
    • Ancient continents
    • World maps, topographical views
  • Astronomy, constellations
    • Theories of creation, formation of planets
    • Outer space, solar systems
  • Experimental mechanics, physics
  • Human nature, physical forms
    • Deformities
      • One-eyed figures
      • Conjoined twins
    • Study of cells, microbiology
      • Antoine van Leeuwenhoek research and discoveries
