Jean Louis Baudelocque was an 18th-century French physician who is best-known for making obstetrics an important medical discipline in France as well as correcting common errors committed by midwives and childbirth doctors. He wrote a book discussing these issues entitled “Principles of Obstetrics” and years later produced another entitled “The Art of Obstetrics.” He taught classes on midwifery and was appointed physician-in-chief by Napoleon!

According to Norman,

“Baudelocque is associated with the technique of pelvic mensuration, the principles of which had been developed by Smellie… He invented a pelvimeter, and taught that the antero-posterior diameter of the pelvis could be reliably estimated by measuring the external conjugate of the pelvis, now usually referred to as ‘Baudelocque’s diameter.’ This doctrine held sway until the advent of x-rays, which revealed its inadequacy.”

Baudelocque favored the use of long forceps, which were standard in France at the time, but he increased the length of the forceps he used – a trend that would become more relevant. (Hibbard, 62). He also helped establish appropriate processes for safe and effective cesarean sections as he was very skilled at executing them; “many of his patients survived despite the lack of antiseptics, anesthesia, and antibiotics.” (Burton, 95).

This 1796 edition of “The Art of Obstetrics” is a fine two-volume set featuring 17 folding engravings depicting the childbirth process.
