John Meares was an 18th-centry Irish explorer who was a notable fur trader with the East India Company. He based many of is voyages and ship out of European colonies in China. His most infamous voyage began in 1788 when he left China with two unregistered ships sailing the Portuguese flag each headed to the Nootka Sound in British Columbia. His arrival began what would be called the ‘Nootka Crisis’. And while the events of his voyages have long been popular amongst voyage historians, the illustrations from his “Voyages” are some of the most desirable of any 18th-century voyages books.

This work, a collection of 29 engravings, illustrates views and maps from Meares’ voyages in China, the Northwest Passage, Calcutta and India, and the Americas.
