1793 pseudo ARISTOTLE English W. Salmon Bizarre Woodcuts Sexuality Midwife
“It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”
― Aristotle
Aristotle was an ancient Greek philosopher and scientist who is regularly considered the ‘Father of Western Philosophy.’ His extensive writings cover a variety of topics from physics and zoology to metaphysics and psychology; and while many of his original thoughts have since been outdated or developed, he laid the foundation for a number of schools of thought, many of which were not expounded upon until the Enlightenment in the 18th-century.
This late 18th-century English version of the “works of Aristotle” was published in London in 1793. It is the self-proclaimed ‘best edition’ and, in addition to notable philosophical works, includes the pseudo-Aristotle treatise of ‘Problemata physica’. The authorship of rest of the works in this book are also called into question. For instance – at the end of the last section, references are made to the number of dying children in London from smog – something Aristotle would… probably not have known about.
This book was edited with prefatory sections by William Salmon and has curious and bizarre woodcut illustrations.
