Schmidlin, a student of Johann Bachofen, served as choirmaster in a small village near Zurich where he composed countless hymns, cantatas, and songs for his singers. In addition to his religious music, he composed plenty of secular or witty songs which helped round out his extensive portfolio of music.
This 1792 printing of the music of Schmidlin was published in Zurich and contains hundreds of pages of songs with shape note music and German text.
