“If you wish to appear agreeable in society, you must consent to be taught many things which you know already.”

Johann Kaspar Lavater

Johann Casper Lavater was an 18th-century philosopher who was well known for his essays on physiognomy. His believes and teachings on physiognomy did not always coincide with Zwinglian philosophies, but he is credited with being the first to introduce the idea that “physiognomy related to the specific character traits of individuals, rather than general types.” (Baggerman, Controlling Time).

This 1789 edition includes hundreds of illustrations of human faces and characters depicting the traits of individuals discussed in the work. This collection of essays dominated bookshelves during the 18th– and 19th-centuries, even during the height of classic literature. The greatest popularity of this book rests with the accompanying illustrations. Extremely desirable!
