Let us read, and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world.”

Voltaire

A rare late-18th-century printing of Voltaire’s “Essay on the Manners and Spirit of Nations.” This work, originally written in 1756, deals with the history of Europe before the time of Charlemagne through the start of the reign of King Louis XIV. Voltaire, most-known for his theatrical works, devoted several chapters of this work to the history of Islam and its influence in European culture, particularly Arabian and Turkish courts. Voltaire, somewhat controversially, compared Arabs to the ancient Hebrews, noting Mohammed as a poet, and their treatment of God.

However, this treatment of Islam in European culture was predominantly critical and negative. Voltaire had strong feelings against Muslim culture particularly to the Quran, which he claims, ‘ignored the laws of physics.’ (Gunny, Images of Islam)
