Johann Casper Lavater was an 18^th-century philosopher who was well known for his essays on physiognomy. His beliefs and teachings on physiognomy did not always coincide with Zwinglian philosophies, but he is credited with being the first to introduce the idea that “physiognomy related to the specific character traits of individuals, rather than general types.” (Baggerman)

This rare 1784 second edition was published in Dutch and includes hundreds of in-text engravings throughout illustrating aspects of human traits. These illustrations are the key to this work’s popularity. It remained popular even at the height of classic literature throughout Europe.
