1784 Letters of Lady Wortley Montagu Turks Ottoman Empire Muslim Social Feminism
Lady Mary Wortley Montagu was an early 18th-century woman of letters who is most remembered for her letters on travels to the Ottoman Empire. Described by many as the first woman to write a secular work on the Muslim Orient, Montagu challenged many of the expected norms about intellectual woman and sought for social change.
This collection of letters described her encounters and findings while touring the Ottoman Empire with her husband Edward Wortley Montagu. She discusses the dangers of a Christian living amongst the Turks.
“There is no possibility for a Christian to live easily under this government, but by the protection of an Ambassador – and the richer they are, the greater is their danger.” (Montagu, Letter XXXI)
In addition to letters, Montagu writes ballades, maxims, and responses to other writings. One of the most important writing was on her observation of primitive forms of the smallpox vaccine. An important book on early feminism and Christianity in Turkey, Asia, and Africa.
