1784 1st ed SLAVERY Thomas Day Letter Declaration of Independence Abolition
Thomas Day was an 18th-century British abolitionist who is best known for his influence on the American Declaration of Independence. Day took exception with the phrase “all men are created equal” considering that signees of the Declaration own negro slaves. Day even is known to have said
“If there be an object truly ridiculous in nature, it is an American patriot, signing resolutions of independency with the one hand, and with the other brandishing a whip over his affrighted slaves”. (Day, Letter, p.33)
Day, himself, provided context for the reason for his ‘Letter on the Slavery of Negroes’. He states,
“the following letter was written in the year 1776 at the request of an American gentleman who desired to know my sentiments upon the slavery of the Negroes.”
