Aeschylus, along with Sophocles and Euripides, is one of the three classical Athens tragedians whose plays have survived. His most famous surviving work was “Prometheus Bound”, written sometime in the middle of the 5th-century BC, which told the story of Prometheus being tortured by Zeus. Having defied Zeus, Prometheus was chained to a rock where an eagle came to him daily and ate from his liver, where in each night, the liver would heal and the cycle would begin again the next morning.

This 1779 English edition of Aeschylus was translated by Potter and contains each of his surviving works including:

  • Prometheus Bound
  • The Suppliants
  • Seven Against Thebes
  • The Oresteia:
    • Agamemnon
    • The Libation Bearers (or Choephoroi)
    • The Eumenides (or The Furies)
  • The Persians
