An exceedingly rare, mid-17th-century book on the history of the Dutch Revolt against the Spanish Hapsburgs in Naples in 1647. This book, written by an unnamed Alessandro Giraffi, was an immensely popular book in the Netherlands following the oppression during the Thirty Years War. This first-hand account of the revolt follows the story of Masaniello, a local Italian fisherman, who led a revolt which ransacked armories and prisons in Naples – a historical event that has been retold, painted, and argued for centuries.  Masaniello was described as,

“…a young man of twenty-seven, beautiful and graceful in appearance, his face was brown and somewhat burned by the sun: black eyes, blond hair, with locks that ran down his neck.” (St. John., 68)
