Jonas Hanway was an 18th-century English merchant. As a commercial partner with a firm in St. Petersburg, he traveled to Persia by way of the Caspian Sea in 1743. He recorded the events of his adventure as well as important historical events in Persia such as the reign of Shah Sultan Hussein, the invasion of Afghans, reign of Sultan Mir Mahmud, rise of Nadir Kouli, and the reign of Adil Shah. However, Hanway’s focus of this work was to describe a history of English commerce in the Caspian Sea area from 1553 to 1743. Hanway describes in great detail being attacked by pirates and struggling with sickness and fever.
