1723 1ed PICART Religious Ceremonies Customs Catholic JEWISH Illustrated FOLIOS
French engraver Bernard Picart’s “Ceremonies et Coutumes Religieuses” is one of the most important, if not the most important 18th-century work on the religious customs of the people of the world. First published in 1723, “Picard” (as this work is often referred to) not only illustrates religious customs but also rituals, church services, prayers, funeral processions and preparations, sacraments, altars, papal jubilees from around the world.
The illustrations in these first two folios from the 1723 first edition depict Roman Catholic and Jewish traditions. It is worth noting that the individual engravings from these tomes are often sold individually for hundreds of dollars – it is quite rare to have such a complete collection of Picart’s famous “Customs” folio illustrations.
