1719 1ed Careri Voyage Around the World Illustrated PERSIA Iran Shah Archaeology
Gio Francesco Gemelli Careri was a 17th-century Italian voyager and traveler who is known to have been the inspiration for the famous ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’. He embarked on a world voyage beginning in Egypt, taking him through the Holy Land, Constantinople Persia, India, and finally in China, where he was assumed to be spying for the Vatican. The voyage then took him to Macau, the Philippines, and eventually to Mexican and Cuba – a true voyage around the world!
Careri wrote ‘Voyage del Monde’ as an accurate description of the countries he visited, however, he also wanted to identify the differences between a true voyage and an imaginary journey – a criticism of those who simply fantasized over geography and maps.
This volume covers Careri’s adventures in Persia. It deals with genealogies of Persian families, life in Isfahan, accurate descriptions of palaces and royal gardens, interactions among pagan idols, wedding and funeral ceremonies, and navigation on to India. This second tome (complete Persia) includes three illustrations including a plan of the Palace of Darius, Persian antiquities, and the King ‘Shah’ of Persia.
