1716 Leonardo Da Vinci Treatise on Painting Science vs ART Italian Renaissance
“Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen.”
― Leonardo da Vinci
Originally published in 1651, Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Trattato della Pittura’ or ‘Treatise on Painting’ is a collection of notes and writings on painting. The main focus of this treatise was to convey that painting was a science and not just an artform. (Greenberg, 259). Da Vinci discusses the state of human emotion in art and incorporates the depictions of those emotions in his art.
This 1716 ‘new edition’ was the first revised edition and includes numerous etchings and Da Vinci engravings.
