Benjamin Jonson was an English playwright, poet, actor, and literary critic, whose artistry exerted a lasting impact upon English poetry and stage comedy in the early 17th-century.  Although he popularized the comedy of humors, he is best known for the satirical plays and epigrammatic poetry.

 

He is generally regarded as the second most important English playwright during the reign of James VI and I after William Shakespeare. He was a towering literary figure, and his influence was enormous for he has been described as ‘One of the most vigorous minds that ever added to the strength of English literature”.

 

This 1716 edition of the works of Ben Jonson was published in London in six fine volumes. Interestingly, this set was the first octavo edition of the poems of Jonson.
