Pellegrino Antonio Orlandi was a 17^th-century Italian historian known for his biographical accounts of famous Italian artists and authors. In addition to his most famous book on painters and sculptors, he published a book of notes on important Bolognese authors. “Notizie degli scrittori bolognesi” contains authors on all types of subjects including astrology and astronomy, mathematics, chemistry, philosophy, military and war, medicine, prophecy and speeches, poetry, and theology.

Bologna was an important European hub of astronomical study in the 17^th– and 18^th-centuries, and many of the authors mentioned in this book had commentary and notes on Galileo and his scientific research.
