Benedikt Carpzov was a 17^th-century German criminal lawyer best known for his extensive portfolio of cases on witchcraft and demon-possession. While his influence on the development of German jurisprudence is important, it is nothing compared to his theories on the supernatural and trials against witches. He is even thought to have sentenced over 20,000 people to death for involvement in witchcraft!

 

One of Carpzov’s most important books was a forensics dictionary which included the legal constitutions and Elector responsibilities in Saxony, where he spent most of his career.
